Time for a 2 week puppy review - Part 1 of 2 Bloodhound Diary Day 14 – This morning started off with rain, followed by more rain. Daddy is out in the barn seeing if he has enough wood to build an Ark. I don’t know what an Ark is, but I can guess it has something to do with the rain.

If he gets to building one he will probably want my help. Which he can have ; )

While I was eating my breakfast daddy came back inside. He said he would hold off on the Ark for now because he needs more wood. He said if it is still raining tomorrow we will have no choice but to build it or we may float away. I agreed with him cause he is daddy and he always knows whats best.

He gave me a smile and a pat on the head and I finished my breakfast. MMmmmmmm breakfast.

Time for a 2 week puppy review – Part 1 of 2

It has been two weeks, so daddy and I figured it was time for a review of what I have learned. So much time has passed where do I begin? Ok, two weeks may not seem like much time to you, but when you are only 10 weeks old (like I am) it seems like forever. Lets get started.

Let’s review the important things that every puppy must learn.

On Day 1 : I learned who my new mommy and daddy would be and that they loved me.

Every dog must learn that they are wanted and loved by their mommy and daddy. If they don’t have 2 new parents then they need to know they are loved by whoever their single parent is (either man or woman).

Daddy says : without love, how can you ever expect your dog to reach it’s full potential as a member of the new family.

On Day 2 : I learned how important it is to have a regular potty schedule every day.

The easiest method of potty training a puppy like me is to establish and maintain a regular potty schedule. It helps your puppy to learn both the correct place to potty, and when he can potty. I like a reward after I potty outside (praise, treat or both). The positive reinforcement helps me learn things faster.

Daddy says : Dogs, like people learn through repetition. Positive reinforcement is a booster to the dogs learning process. In addition to maintaining the regular potty schedule, you also need to ensure your dog is on a consistent and agreeable diet. This helps yield more predictable results for you and the dog helping to reduce the chance of a potty accident.

In addition, keep in mind the current developmental phase of your dog. Example: expect a 7-8 week old puppy to need to potty at least every 2-3 hours. Sometimes sooner. At that age they will usually require time for both kinds of potty (liquid and solid). They process solids and liquids at about the same rate. Time intervals will gradually increase as the dog grows older.

It is NOT GOOD to withhold water from your dog unless it is required for medical reasons and you are directed to do so by your Veterinarian. Withholding water for the sake of making the dog less likely to interrupt your schedule, having to let the dog out to potty is wrong and harmful to your dog. A chronic state of dehydration is extremely bad for your pet. This can result in digestive problems (large intestine absorbs water and requires such to process the dogs solid wastes), lethargy (chronic fatigue) and major organ damage (such as liver or kidneys) over time, in addition to a host of other health problems.

How does this happen? Simple. When the dog can not intake enough fluids, then the body will shift fluids from elsewhere in the body to compensate. Fluids will shift from the vascular system (reducing blood volume), endocrine system, major organs etc.

Be good to your dog by feeding and watering them properly, giving your dog the best chance to live a long healthy life with you.

Ugh! I am starting to feel like I am going a little crazy. Bloodhound Diary Day 13 – Ugh! I am starting to feel like I am going a little crazy. More rain today. It just keeps falling and falling forever and ever. Where does it all come from? Why does it fall? Who fills the sky back up after?

Playing in the house and watching movies with daddy is fun, but not every day in a row. I want to runnnnnn and bite at the grass. Chase pine cones and hunt sneaky squirrels.

We don’t have any grass or pine cones in the house, and no squirrels to hunt in the house. Oh if only we had squirrels to hunt in the house. Lots of squirrels sneaking from room to room, doing squirrel things. That would be big fun!

Sitting, looking out the window I watched the rain falling. Thunder shaking the house every little while. There is so much sniffing and running and sniffing some more to be done. I am missing it all. If only we could go play outside.

Maybe tomorrow the rain will be gone and we will be freeeeeee to run and play in the big grass. Maybe . . . if the sky runs out of water. Stupid rain.

Instead of watching a movie this morning after breakfast, daddy thought we should spend some time doing ‘good dog’ things. That made me happy. I love doing good dog things. I get to eat tasty things every time I am a good dog. Eating is my most favoritest thing of everything I do.

I could smell the tasty things daddy put in his pocket. I could smell the tasty things daddy put in his pocket.

The smells made my mouth water. I jumped once then twice and pawed at his feet. Sniffing at his pocket, trying to look like I was hungry. Daddy looked at me and asked ‘whats the matter boy?’. I turned in a circle then another, whining in a small voice.

He just kept looking at me.

Confusion came over me. This usually works on daddy. This is when he gives in and hands me a yummy telling me what a good dog I am. Ok, time to think. I stepped back and bounced at his feet letting out a yip and a bark. I wagged my tail as fast as I could whining in a smaller voice this time.

Daddy looked at me with a face of stone. He was immune.

We stood there looking at each other for what seemed longer than the rain was falling. I finally decided I would not get a yummy tasty this way. I would have to do a good dog thing. Then the tasties would be mine.

I sat down looking at him, waiting. Then waiting some more. And it happened . . . Good Boy! Daddy said it and reached in his pocket. Oh yes, oh yessss I can hardly wait. I stood up and sniffed long and deep, the smell of the tasty was more than I could stand.

He offered a treat to me. I was gentle when I took it from from daddy’s hand. I learned early on that he doesn’t like it when I bite-and-jerk it from him. So I am always careful not to touch his fingers with my teeth.

I chewed slowly, tasting every taste there was in the meaty treat. Feeling it break smaller and smaller between my teeth. I wagged my tail looking at my daddy. Happiness. Oh yes, I am a good dog. I am a very good dog.

Now I just need to remember what I did so I can be a good dog again.

A stormy day. Bloodhound Diary Day 12 – Today it rained most of the day. Mixed with the rain were two different thunderstorms that passed over us. The 100 degree heat was gone, at least for today. Sad thing is, with all the rain our outside time was limited to potty only.

While we could not play much outside, we played and played inside. My favorite game we played was chase-the-balls. Daddy and I chased 3 balls all over the place. All at the same time. As soon as I would catch one trying to run away from me, my daddy would let another one go, then another.

When we were finished playing, the balls were as tired as we were.

I did much better with my biting chewing problem. Daddy was proud of me. The few times I was tempted by chewy looking things, my daddy said ‘NO!” which reminded me not to try tasting them. Then he would give me a small treat of yummy crunchy chicken jerky.

Later in the day while we were tired of play, we watched some Stargate SG-1 together on the couch. That is one of my favorite shows. Though SG-1 is always good (I like Stargate Atlantis too!), I often wonder why they never have a bloodhound on the team. After all, we can smell those snakey-head thingies from a mile away.

I don’t think dogs could be enslaved by the snakey-in-the-head thingies.
