Hello, My Name is Anubis Bloodhound Diary Day 1 – Hello, I am Anubis and today is my birthday! Well, it’s kind of my birthday because today I am 2 months old. As a birthday present I got a new family, a bed of my very own and lots of new toys. My new mommy and daddy (aka humans) got them for me. I have some new friends here too.

I kind of miss my bloodhound family. I think about them often. But I think things will be really good here with my new family, my new mommy and daddy love me very much. My new daddy decided he would help me to keep a diary about my life with my new human family so my bloodhound family will know that I am fine. My new daddy is so nice.

Let me start with the story of how I came to be with my new human family.

Before I came to live with my new human family I had a really big bloodhound family. I had a bloodhound mommy and a bloodhound daddy. I knew my Bloodhound mommy best because she took care of me and fed me and kept me safe. I would see my bloodhound daddy mostly during the day around the yard. He played with us some, but it was mostly my bloodhound mommy that spent lots of time with us. I had 3 bloodhound brothers and 6 bloodhound sisters. Some of them had already gone to live with their own new human families before I found mine.

Then one day my new mommy and daddy came to look at me and my brothers and sisters. I didn’t know they would really be my new mommy and daddy but I was hoping and hoping. They stayed for a little while looking at all of us, calling to us, picking up and played with a couple of my brothers and sisters but they didn’t pick me up. Then after a few more minutes they just stood back looking at all of us and talked human talk together. Then they left. I was so sad. After they left, my bloodhound mommy came over to all of us and started licking us telling us that everything was alright. I believed her and the sadness went away.

The next day my new human mommy and daddy came back! I was sooooo happy to see them I ran and ran nipping at the wind and the grass, just hoping they would notice me and take me to my new home. Again they stood back and watched all of us running and playing, paying no special attention to any of us. Just talking together and pointing. I figured out what the pointing was, but the talking had me confused. I don’t understand human talk. If they would have came over and sniffed me, bowed down, wagged their tales and gave me a lick then I would have known what they were thinking. But the human talk had me baffled.

After a little while they stopped talking and left us again. It didn’t look like they were going to be my new family after all. That night, me and my brothers and sisters all huddled together and dreamed of going home with the human family. As we slept some whined and some whimpered softly. Some even started kicking and yipping as though they were chasing after the man and woman as they were leaving yet again. It was a restless night, but I hoped and hoped they would come back for me.

The next day went by and then another. The summer nights were hot and humid which made each night seem much longer than it really was. I finally settled on the idea that I may just stay with my bloodhound mommy and daddy forever when. . . . the human man we were staying with came outside and picked me up and carried me into his big house. It was already getting dark, I should be getting into the puppy pile with my brothers and sisters to sleep. Why was the man taking me inside the big house? I was confused and kinda scared.

The man set me down and let me investigate the strange place. There was warm fuzzy stuff covering the floors and the air was cool. It smelled of things to eat. While I was snooping and sniffing everything I heard a tapping on the door to the big house. The man went to it and opened it and. . . . they came back! They came back! They came back! I was so excited I yipped and yelped, wagging my tail. I went over to my new human mommy and daddy and ran in circles around their legs sniffing them and wagging my tail as fast as I could. I just knew they would notice me now. They smiled at me then smiled at each other. This was a good sign! I was so nervous with anticipation.

I waited while the humans talked and talked and talked. They talked for such a long time that I thought they forgot about me. I wished so much I knew what they were saying.

When they were done talking, the man picked me up and gave me a rub, then he handed me to my new human mommy. My new human daddy smiled at me and scratched behind my ears, then he shook hands with the man. My new mommy and daddy turned and headed out the door. It looked like I was really going home with my new family.

We left the house and got into a car. It was really big and smelled of strange things but I wasn’t scared. My new mommy cuddled me on her lap and made funny human noises at me. It was a good feeling. My new daddy started the car and we left, leaving the other humans and my bloodhound family behind. I wondered if I would ever see my bloodhound mommy and daddy again and it made me feel sad inside.

I started to whimper and whine feeling more and more sad the further we drove away. I think my new mommy knew how I was feeling because she hugged me and stroked me cooing softly in her human talk. Though I didn’t understand what she was saying, just the sound of her voice made me feel better. Listening to her voice and feeling her gently stroke my fur made my feeling of sadness fade. She made me feel as safe and as loved as I did when my bloodhound mommy would nudge me with her nose and lick me. I was going home with my new human family and I just knew everything would be ok. I was really going home.

They picked me!

A Note from my Mommy and Daddy:

We selected Anubis after much consideration. He is beautiful, healthy and seems to be very bright. We are looking forward to helping him reach his potential as a bloodhound and as a member of our family.

While Anubis is growing up, my wife and I (aka the human mommy and daddy) thought it would be interesting to chronicle his growth, learning and development as seen from ‘his’ perspective.

In addition to being entertaining, we also felt this may help others who desire to have their own bloodhound in understanding not only the development of a dog, but specific issues which may pertain to the bloodhound breed.

Bloodhounds are a wonderful breed. You are welcome to contact us if you have any questions.
