Something is following me. Bloodhound Diary Day 9 – Today started out the same as most, until we went outside. The sun had just woken up and it was already hot and sticky. Daddy said the humidity must me 90% because the air was heavy.

Humidity (ha-ha I know what that is) must have been because after only a few minutes daddy was covered with sweat. I don’t think we will be going very far for a walk today. If we even go.

After breakfast we played some and then daddy put on a movie (I love movie time). The one we watched was called Underworld : Rise of the Lycans. It was really scary but I couldn’t look away.

All the dog monsters were so strong. I cheered and cheered them. Maybe I will grow that strong some day.

Something is following me.

After the movie was over it was potty time. Daddy locked the door, which meant we would be going for a walk after all. Hurray! I always like walking best when the sun wakes up and when the sun goes to sleep.

I ran outside and across the porch and nearly fell when I reached the stairs. I almost forgot that I can’t go down them by myself yet. It’s just too hard. My daddy said ‘hold on boy and I will get you’ as he reached down and scooped me up. After putting me down on the grass he started laughing at me. It wasn’t a small laugh, it was a big one which made me feel dumb.

Ok, he was right. But I still felt dumb ; / Daddy said ‘you know, the only reason you can’t go down stairs yet is because when you put your head down, all the skin slides down your neck and shuts your eyes. You will just have to get a bit bigger boy’.

Ok, he was right. But I still felt dumb ; /

We sniffed our way down the road past the house next door, past all the sheep (they were all sleeping in the shade), then on down past the bend in the road to the hayfield. It was a good walk so far. We started getting some hot but not bad yet, as most of this was still shaded by trees.

Then we came out into the sun. It got so hot so fast that I thought we would burst in flames (I saw that in a movie). That’s when I saw it . . .

Something was following me. I was dark and really creepy looking. Sometimes I thought it went away but when I turned around there it was again! It was scary. It was the most scary thing I have seen, even scarier than the movies.

I ran and ran and ran some more. I just knew it couldn’t keep up with me for very long. I was wrong. Sometimes it looked like a dog, then sometimes it got really really big like a monster. I tried sniffing it it but it had no smell. None at all!

I turned to daddy hoping he could help stop this thing from chasing me but daddy was still a ways behind me. That’s when I saw that something was chasing daddy too. These creepy things were everywhere! We were surrounded. It was sneaking behind him while he walked.

Daddy must not have seen the monster following him because he didn’t seem concerned at all.

Ok, this was time for me to do something. I ran back to my daddy and jumped onto the sneaky creepy monster thing following him. Then I nipped and barked, but nothing. It didn’t run and hide like I was hoping. It just stayed there, staring at me. I was waiting for it to bite back at me when Daddy stopped. The strange creepy thing stopped right behind him. It was shaped like a human but just like with the monster following me, it had no smell.

I have never known a human not to smell.

Feeling defeated, I gave up and sat down. This was more confusing than the egg mystery. Feeling defeated, I gave up and sat down. I looked at daddy then looked at the thing following daddy and let out a little whine. I usually get my daddy’s attention best when I whine (that’s daddy’s weakness). Daddy finally reached down and picked me up again. He gave me a scratch and a hug, then turned me to look at him. With a big smile he let out another laugh.

Daddy said ‘don’t be scared boy, its only your shadow. We all have one when the sun is out. I was wondering when you would get around to noticing it’. There was this dumb feeling coming over me again.

Hmmmmm I thought to myself, only my shadow.

I stared at my daddy and gave him a look like I already knew about shadow things. I don’t think it was very convincing because he laughed again, gave me another hug and put me back down. As soon as I was on the ground guess what, the creepy shadow thing was back again clinging to my tail.

I looked at the sun and I looked at the shadow thingy, I turned left and right, moved forward and back. The shadow thing copied every move I made. I think my daddy is right, though I still don’t quite trust the shadow thingy. I will just have to wait and see if it tries to do anything besides follow me everywhere.

We turned back toward the house and finished our walk. When we came to the shady place the shadow thingy was gone (oh, what a relief). Daddy wanted me to believe that it went away, but I think it is just hiding with all the other shadow monsters. Stupid shadow thingy. I will have to think about this more.

We climbed the porch and went into the house, the heat melted off of us when we went through the door. Daddy looked like he had melted some too. He went to wash up and put on some dry clothes while I drank and drank nice cool water. I didn’t think about the shadow thingy anymore. All I was thinking of was Mmmmmmm cool tasty water.

After daddy got a cool drink he put on another movie. Being with daddy + the couch + a movie is one of my favorite things to do. Almost as much fun as eating.

Gotta be quiet now, movie is starting ; )

A Note from my Mommy and Daddy:

We selected Anubis after much consideration. He is beautiful, healthy and seems to be very intelligent. We are looking forward to helping him reach his potential as a bloodhound and as a member of our family.

While Anubis is growing up, my wife and I (aka the human mommy and daddy) thought it would be interesting to chronicle his growth, learning and development as seen from ‘his’ perspective.

In addition to being entertaining, we also felt this may help others who desire to have their own bloodhound in understanding not only the development of a dog, but specific issues which may pertain to the bloodhound breed.

Bloodhounds are a wonderful breed. You are welcome to contact us if you have any questions.
