I didn't know butter could fly. Bloodhound Diary Day 16 – Today was a lazy day for me. Daddy said since we worked real hard over the last couple weeks, we could have a day to relax. This was ok with me cause I was a bit tired today.

We spent a while out in the yard after breakfast. I sniffed around some, chasing these big flying things. They were too fast for me, I never did manage to catch one. Daddy said they were butterflies.

Interesting. That explains why they were all yellow.

I didn’t know butter could fly.

You would think that the hot sun would make them fly slower, cause of the melting. More interesting. I just had to catch one and taste it! MMmmmmmm butter. Sadly, I never did. The melting didn’t seem to slow them down at all. Stupid butterflies.

When I was done chasing the butterflies we went back inside. Mommy was busy sewing her flat baby blanket (for the flat baby?). Daddy and I settled down for a while and watched a scary movie. It was called Cloverfield. I don’t know why they called it Cloverfield, I didn’t see even one clover in the whole movie. Maybe the giant-scary-bad-alien-thing ate them all.

Maybe that is why the big monster was mad. There were no more clovers to eat. I bet the city people feed it next time. Will someone please tell the city people to feed the monster so next time he won’t get so mad?

After the movie finished, my daddy let me play while he did a few things around the house. I pretended I was a giant alien monster like from the movie. I chased my toys while they tried to escape from me. They never had a chance. I stomped and chewed, chasing them from room to room. I made a good alien monster . . . Raaaaaawwwwrrrr!

Please, don’t make me go down there!

Please, don't make me go down there! After dinner while we were going outside for a walk, daddy decided I should take a few minutes and work on my down-the-stairs walk. Ugh! I am really really good at my up-the-stairs walk, but the down-the-stairs walk scares me. I am always afraid I will fall on my head. It is just too hard.

Daddy stood at the bottom step and called to me. Reluctantly, I came to the top of the stairs and looked down. It was so far. My head started to get fuzzy. Whining at my daddy, I sat down. There is no way I will ever go down there on my own. No way!

Daddy coaxed me, he begged, he pleaded . . . I just sat there.

Feeling sorry for my daddy, I pretended to look brave. Bringing myself to my feet I inched closer to the stairs and tried to step down, but every time my paw would touch the top step I pulled it back quickly. I wanted to be brave for my daddy, so I kept trying. It was no use. I was numb with fear and felt weak, but I tried again for my daddy.

After a few tries my daddy picked me up just a little and helped me reach the first step, then the second, then the third. Before I knew it I was standing at the bottom looking up. WOW! I did it! Ok, ‘we’ did it. But I still did it. I felt so proud of myself, I pranced and jumped around daddy’s legs.

Good Boy! Daddy praised and petted, then praised some more. He reached into his pocket and gave me a beef nummy-num (nummy-num is the human technical term for treat). It was chewy, it was tasty, it was mine. Yum! I am a good dog.

We finished our walk and went inside the house, spending the evening relaxing on the couch together. I chewed and tugged at some of my favorite toys, falling asleep while daddy watched some television.

I dreamed of green hay fields and chasing butterflies.

If you enjoy reading about Anubis, he would be happy to hear from you.

A Note from my Mommy and Daddy:

We selected Anubis after much consideration. He is beautiful, healthy and seems to be very intelligent. We are looking forward to helping him reach his potential as a bloodhound and as a member of our family.

While Anubis is growing up, my wife and I (aka the human mommy and daddy) thought it would be interesting to chronicle his growth, learning and development as seen from ‘his’ perspective.

In addition to being entertaining, we also felt this may help others who desire to have their own bloodhound in understanding not only the development of a dog, but specific issues which may pertain to the bloodhound breed.

Bloodhounds are a wonderful breed. You are welcome to contact us if you have any questions.
